Intensivist Program

Management of a critically ill patient has always been a challenge. Now, with greater diagnostic and treatment options, the complexity of the care of these seriously ill patients has also increased.

In 2002, Kadlec became the first hospital in the area to utilize "intensivists" - physicians who specialize in caring for critically ill patients in the Medical Center's critical care unit. Intensivists coordinate the care provided by nurses, respiratory therapists and others as needed by the patient. They provide continuous clinical assessment and are able to address subtle changes in clinical conditions early. When clinical problems do arise, one of the intensivists is immediately available to intervene.

Kadlec has an intensivist on duty 24-hours a day.

Research has shown that having such a specialist on staff improves the outcome for patients.
